Military Appreciation Day Plans Under Way

By Steve Rensberry, Editor

St. Jacob resident Suzy Bushur has been making the rounds recently gathering support for a planned Military Appreciation Day and 5K Run in St. Jacob this summer.

Most recently Bushur presented plans for the event before the St. Jacob Village Board, who was expected to make a decision either at their meeting on May 15 or shortly thereafter.

If all works out, the “1st Annual Military Appreciation Day” will be held on Saturday, July 6, Bushur  said, and the race will be free to all military members and their families. Members of the general public will be charged an entry fee for the race of $20, if they register before June 15, and $30 after then, including race day. T-shirts will available as supplies last. Events will continue after the race from approximately 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Everything will take place at St. Jacob Township Park, at 239 West Main St. in St. Jacob. The race will start in the park and go throughout the streets in St. Jacob, returning to the park for the finish.

Bushur said the event will include activities for children and adults alike, and will feature a “QR” Code Scavenger Hunt, Era Center, Children’s Activity Center with patriotic activities, a rock wall, a venders/crafter area, and other displays. There will also be live music.

Featured tables will include those by Got Your Six Support Dogs, Support Up Veterans, an Honor Flight Letter Writing area, and Wreaths Across America Jefferson Barracks.

A promotional letter about the event notes giveaways and prizes that will be donated by local businesses, including a Henry Military Service 2nd edition .225/L/LR 2-inch Octagon Engraved Level Action Rifle.

“Military Appreciation Day is free to all service families and open to the public,” the notice states. For more information, people are asked to contact Suzy Bushur at 618-477-7686, or by email at
