Triad’s girls basketball had another solid week to add to their late season surge. The squad went 1-1 over their past week, and are now 6-2 in their last 8 games. This is a dramatic turnaround from their 3-11 start to the season.
The week started off with a match-up with the Salem Wildcats. That Monday night match-up was Triad’s second game in the Highland Tournament. Their opponents entered the contest with an 8-10 record.
Triad started the game off with a strong first half performance to take a 27-17 lead. With that first half, the team had already passed their 18 point total from their previous game. The Lady Knights would carry their moment into the next half.
To open the third quarter, the unit went on an 8-3 run. This expanded their lead to 35-20. Triad was not closely contested for the lead anymore after that.
By the end of the game, Triad had obtained a 56-34 win. Avery Bohnensteihl led the team with a 17 point performance. Alyssa Powell added on 16 of her own.
With their win over Salem, the Lady Knights moved to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket against Breese Central. The Cougars entered the game with a strong 16-7 record.
The opening quarter of the game was closely contested, with Triad trailing only 8-5. Unfortunately for the Lady Knights, the second quarter was a much more one sided affair. This left the squad trailing 18-7 at halftime.
Triad’s offense picked up for the third quarter, but they also had their worst quarter defensively. This allowed the Cougars to take a 31-14 lead. Triad did manage to out score their opponents in the fourth quarter, but still lost 39-24.
Powell led the squad in the loss with 11 points. The team has an upcoming road game against conference foe Highland on Thursday. The team will play host to Granite City the following week, and they will look to continue their late season momentum against both of those opponents.
