Lady Knights Kick Season Off With Dominant Wins, Start 2-0
By Anthony Jones
Triad’s Lady Knights basketball team opened last year slow with a 3-10 start, but they look to kick this season off in much stronger fashion. The team has started their season after a long wait and have already taken on two teams. Their first game of the season was a Wednesday night hosting of Granite City.
Triad set the tone early for the game by jumping off to a huge lead, tallying 10 points before Granite City sunk their first basket. The visitors did manage to trim the lead down to 13-4 by the end of the first quarter with some competitive play near its end. Triad junior Alyssa Powell was the driving force for the early offensive explosion, as she scored 7 points in the first frame.
The second quarter was kicked off as Powell sunk yet another basket. The Warriors hit a free throw to trim the lead, but then Reagen Chigas drained a three pointer to help extend the Lady Knight’s lead. Granite City responded with a three point shot of their own, but Triad closed the half out by going on a 7-0 run, which was topped off by another Chigas three pointer.
At the half, the Lady Knights had built a lead of 25-8. Powell still led Triad in points at 9. Chigas was also a key contributor with her 6 total points.
The third quarter would prove to be Triad’s best of the day and when they would build an untakeable lead. The team jumped out strong by making an 8-0 run. Granite City ended that run with a free throw, which would be their lone point of the period.
Triad would score 13 more in the quarter, giving them a 46-9. Perhaps even more impressive than the score advantage in the third quarter was how well the Lady Knights spread the ball around. A total of 8 different players scored for them during that frame.
The final quarter of the contest was rather uneventful. Anderson sunk a three pointer for the Lady Knights, moving their total to 49. The visitors sank two free throws in the quarter, which gave a final score of 49-11.
Triad’s leading scorer for the night was Powell at 11. Sami Hartoin was close behind with a tally of 8. Chigas, Manso, and Anderson all added 6 of their own on to the total.
The Lady Knights also played host to the East Alton Wood River Oilers last week. Triad played dominant in that game as well, building a 36-3 lead at halftime. The final score was 62-14 as the Lady Knights moved to 2-0 on the season.
Sami Hartoin led the scoring efforts for Triad as she racked up 11. Avery Bohnenstiehl and Brooke Holcomb both added 9 for the team’s total. Powell also had another solid game as she scored 8.
Triad’s upcoming games are listed below.

Why aren’t seniors being played on the Varsity team. They put in 3 years to get here and now they aren’t allowed to start or play a full game (unlike Boy’s Vardity). Coach has the idea because they will be leaving to go off to college they don’t need time on the court. They are not good enough to play but nepotism is the key factor who puts feet on the court not talent. When will sports turn back to who works hard and have abilities to win and SPORTSMANSHIP matters not who your parents are !!!
