The Triad School Board approved the district’s 2021-22 calendar and looked into financial issues at its Monday, February 22 meeting.

The first day of school will be on August 12.

“It’s been a challenge after this school year to really think ahead because we’re so hesitant to think what next year is going to be like,” said superintendent Leigh Lewis. She said classes will start earlier next year and students will have fall, winter and spring breaks.

“We’ve tried our best to look at what is optimal for learning and tried to minimize short weeks, choppy weeks – things like that,” she said.

“I’m not going to guarantee that there might not be a change somewhere down the line,” Lewis added. “But that should give parents and staff members an opportunity to look ahead and start planning.”

She said that the district is also working on finances and might possibly have to amend the budget.

“We’re still continuing to work on getting our fund balances in line with our bank balances,” Lewis said. “We seem to be making progress, but we’re not exactly where we want to be just yet.” She said they’ve noticed a few line item errors in the budget that, once corrected, could lead to amendments to make it “more accurate of what revenue’s coming in and expenditures going out,” she said. Last year’s budget was amended due to the solar project.

Lewis said the district needs to look at funding for its share of the cost of the projects coming up – Phase 2 of the Solar Plan and also the concrete and fencing that were up for approval that night. The district has some call-able bonds from 2013 that could be refinanced to save the money.

In other action the board approved:

• the lowest bid from WWCS Inc. for $239,986 for the purchase and installation of a concrete parking lot for school buses.

• The lowest bid from  Chesley Commercial Fence & Rail for $89,975 to install fencing around two district solar fields.

The board accepted the resignation of Mike Raymond, director of business and  communication, as of Wednesday, February 17.

The next school board meeting will be held on Monday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m.
