With the end of the Olympics approaching, the competition level has ramped up on the volleyball court. This past weekend the #1 ranked women’s team in the world, the United States, secured first place in Pool B. They played the Dominican Republic yesterday in the quarterfinals but the results were unavailable at press time.

Collinsville native Michelle Bartsch-Hackley continues to play a crucial role in the success of the American side.

The U.S. side secured 1st place in Pool B with a comeback, 3-2 win over Italy August 1st. Bartsch-Hackley had 13 kills and 12 digs in the crucial matchup.

The team from the Russian Olympic Committee dominated the U.S. squad in the fourth match of the Games sweeping the American side 3-0. The loss was the first of the Olympics for the Americans. Bartsch-Hackley had nine service receptions, four kills, and four digs.

On July 29th the U.S. squad had to fend off Turkey in five games to push their record to 3-0. Bartsch-Hackley recorded 23 service receptions to lead the squad. She also posted six kills and five digs.

If the USA qualified for either the bronze or gold medal matchup there will be a watch party at Kahok Stadium or Fletcher Gym Saturday night, August 7. If they play for the bronze, it will be at 7 p.m. inside of Fletcher Gym. If they play for gold it will be outdoors at Kahok Stadium. There will be a giant screen in place for fans to watch the action regardless of location.

Admission is free to either location. If it is for the gold, there will be concessions available for purchase.
