By Anthony Jones

Picking up where they left out last season, Triad’s girls golf team has gotten off to a great start to their season. The second Triad team to start their fall season, behind boys golf, the squad has competed in three contests so far.

Starting their season, the Lady Knights traveled to the Highland Country Club to take on the native Bulldogs on August 16. The two squads were closely matched, but Triad ultimately proved victorious by a team score of 187-194.

Kicking off her sophomore campaign strong, Emma Hill led the charge for Triad with a score of 42, which was six over par. The Lady Knight’s finish placed her first overall as an individual on the day.

Just behind her was Makenna Jensen who shot nine over par with a score of 45. This effort was good enough to tie Highland’s Maci Miles for second overall.

Makenna Keith and Alexa Shreve also provided strong finishes for Triad. Keith finished in a tie with a Bulldog for fourth place after a score of 49 for the day. Two strokes and four places behind her, Shreve helped the Lady Knights with a fifteen over par performance.

Other competitors for the squad were Paige Hawkes and Layla Moore. Hawkes ended in tenth overall and Moore took eleventh with scores of 54 and 56, respectively.

The following day the team traveled to the Madison County Tournament to compete against the five other large schools. After finishing with a score of 332, Triad took second overall, trailing Edwardsville by 18 strokes. The battle for second was close as Alton finished five strokes behind Triad and Collinsville one stroke behind them.

Hill once again led the Knights as she broke beneath par for the first time of the year with a 69 stroke, one under par performance. She finished second among all individuals behind Edwardsville’s Nicole Johnson.

Also breaking into the top ten of the day, Keith finished with an 85 stroke performance. One spot behind her in eleventh, Jensen finished 17 over par via a score of 87.

Just inside the top twenty, Hawkes ended in seventeenth after scoring 91 for her day. Shreve and Moore wrapped up Tirad’s day with scores of 27 and 31, respectively.

The team wrapped up their week on August 20 at the Belleville West Invitational. Held at the Orchards GC, the event boasted fourteen teams. Triad took home sixth overall with a score of 375, leaving them 5 strokes away from top five finishers Alton.

Once again leading the Lady Knights’ efforts, Hill took fourteenth overall with a score 85 and 14 over par. Jensen finished close behind her in eighteenth place after shooting eighteen over par.

Sneaking into the top 30, Keith finished her day with a tally of 96, which was 25 over par. Her score earned her twenty ninth overall.

Moore, Shreve, and Hawkes all finished close together. Moore and Shreve scored totals of 105 and 108, good for fifty fourth and fifty eighth place, respectively. In sixty first place, Hawkes finished her day with a score of 109, good for 38 over par.
