Karen Szegedy

Karen Sue Szegedy, age 74, of Collinsville (formerly of Edwardsville), born January 1, 1947 in East St. Louis, IL, passed away September 7, 2021 at Anderson Hospital, Maryville.

Karen was a homemaker in her early years and later worked and retired from the City of Collinsville where she served as the shuttle bus director. She was a past president of the Collinsville Unit #10 PTA.  She enjoyed golf, camping, watching golf and football on TV, gardening, decorating for the holidays, drives on the River Road in her convertible, facetiming with her granddaughter, and baking with her grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles “Beans” and Lois (nee Surber) Kassing Merkel; a step-father who raised her, Frank Merkel; a sister, Charlotte Hazzard; and a brother, Charles Kassing.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Szegedy, whom she married on November 15, 1969; a son, Bob (Erin) Szegedy of Troy; a daughter, Stacy Szegedy of Long Beach, CA; her beloved grandchildren, Taylor and Peyton Szegedy; a brother-in-law, Jim Hazzard of Glen Carbon; a sister-in-law, Rita Kassing of Moro; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services were held on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville.  Private burial will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Siteman Cancer Center and will be received at the visitation or may be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 North Center Street, Maryville.
