Florence Helen Zielonko, nee, Shotts

Florence Helen Zielonko, nee, Shotts, 99 of Glen Carbon, Illinois passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at her home in Meridian Village in Glen Carbon. 

Florence was born on October 6, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois; the daughter of the late Andrew and Julia (Banczak) Szatkowski. Florence was a Registered Nurse and then became a homemaker, mom and wife after her marriage to the late Dr. Walter L. Zielonko on May 11, 1947 at St. Genevieve Church in Chicago. Florence graduated from St. Anne’s School of Nursing class of 1944 in Chicago. She was a faithful member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Troy, Illinois and the St Ann’s Sodality for over 40 years and was a faithful parishioner for 21 years at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Glen Carbon. She was a 50-year member of the Canasta Club in Troy and a loving homemaker, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. Florence will be remembered for the love of her family and all the special times they shared together. 

Florence is survived by and will be missed by her sons; William Zielonko (Judith March) of Eureka, MO, Thomas (Debbie) Zielonko of Mt. Vernon, IL, Martin (Teresa) Zielonko of Festus, MO, Frederick (Lori) Zielonko of Chesterfield, MO, Steven (Terri) Zielonko of Glen Carbon, IL; daughter-in-law, Alice Zielonko; grandchildren, Jennifer Zielonko Shaughnessy, Zachary (Megan) Zielonko, Stephanie (Brian) Noakes, Quinn (Amanda) Zielonko, Connor (Anna) Zielonko, Harper (Mark) Zielonko, Dylan Zielonko (Maria Paschke), Alexander (Timothy) Zielonko, Matthew (Leah) Zielonko, John Copeland, Jeremy (Kimberly) Copeland; great-grandchildren, Kate Shaughnessy, Michael Shaughnessy, John Shaughnessy, Jackson Noakes, Sophie Zielonko, Nora Zielonko, Asa McGuire Zielonko, Ethan Zielonko, Ava Zielonko, Natalia Copeland, Julian Estrada and many other close family members and friends. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Florence was preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Shaughnessy and her great-granddaughter, Zoey Zielonko.

In celebration of Florence’s life a memorial visitation will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 155 North Main Street in Glen Carbon with Fr. Patrick Gibbons officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorial donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity or the Foundation for Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood (SUDC).
