Kahok boys track has great results at SIU event

It was another record breaking day for the Collinsville boys track team on March 5 at the SIU Indoor High School Invitational in Carbondale.
The Kahoks set 20 personal records, posted six performances that place them in the top ten all-time at CHS for indoor track and set one school record.
KJ Thorps-Watt had two individual performances and one relay effort that landed in the CHS top ten. He established a new school record in the long jump with a personal record jump of 6.77 meters or 22’ 2 ½” on his sixth and final jump of the day.
That jump gave him a first place finish in the 28-person field. His last jump beat Carbondale freshman Calen Lilly. Senior Mason Kooi of Springfield (Lutheran) place third. He won the Class 1A state crown a year ago in the high jump and triple jump.
“KJ did it on his last jump which was pretty awesome,” said CHS coach Darryl Frerker. “He hit it right on the mark and had a great jump.”
The Kahok returned with second place in the high jump. His mark of 6’ 2 ¾” was a personal indoor record and #2 on the CHS all-time indoor list.
He fell to Kooi who jumped an incredible 6’ 10 3/4 “. Kooi attempted three times to clear 7’ 0 ¼” but couldn’t.

Thorps-Watt was also part of the 4×400 meter relay team with Jeremiah Yarbough, Sebastian Munoz and Jalek Nelson. They took fifth place with a time of 3:42.30. They finished two seconds behind Paducah, Ky. (McCracken County) for fourth place.
East St. Louis won the 4×4 with a time of 3:30.46.
Senior Jonathan Sewell took fourth place in the shot put with a heave of 14.75 meters or 48’ 4 ¾”. Sophomore Devin Habermehl took seventh place with a toss of 13.5 meters or 44’ 3 ½”.
Junior Caleb Smith of Salem won again this week with a throw of 17.01 meters or 55’ 9 ¾”.
Talin Nabors – a freshman – took third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.00 seconds. That represented a personal record and #3 on the all-time top ten list at CHS. Adam Frazier – also a freshman – took 10th place with a time of 10.07 seconds. That showed up on the all-time list at #8.
Demarlynn Taylor of East St. Louis won with a time of 8.78 seconds.
Nabors is listed as the top freshman in Illinois in the 60m hurdles after this weekend.
Andrew Gonski took fifth place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.23. It was also a personal best and #6 on the all-time indoor list.
Gavin Genisio of Benton – last year’s Class 2A state runner-up in the 800 – won at SIU with a time of 1:58.25.
He also set a personal record and ran the #7 time in CHS indoor history with a 4:55.23 in the 1600 meters.
Pinckneyville’s Isaac Teel – last year’s Class 2A state champ in the event – won with a time of 4:24.85.
Isaiah Gordon took seventh place in the 200 meters with a time of 25.05 seconds. James Barragan of McCracken County took top honors with a time of 22.79 seconds.
The 4×800 meter relay team of Brian Castro, James Kline, Will Slazinik, and Ben Simpkins took fourth place and now sit at #9 on the all-time indoor list at Collinsville with a time of 9:18.76. East St. Louis took first with a time of 8:41.87.
In the 4×200 meter relay, the team of Yarbough, Munoz, Nelson, and Qwille Holmes took fifth place in 1:40.02. East St. Louis once again was the winner with a time of 1:35.65.
Upcoming Schedule
They will be in the Tiger Invite hosted by Edwardsville at Principia College in Elsah on Friday.
