David Emery Peverly
David Emery Peverly, age 82 of Troy, IL, passed away on
Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis,
MO surrounded by his family.
David was born on November 29, 1940 in Decatur, IL to the late
Joseph and Doris Isabel (nee Ferrill) Peverly. He honorably served
21 years in the United States Coast Guard including a tour in
Vietnam. After retiring, he became credentialed as a Real Property
Administrator and served in Commercial Real Estate in downtown
St. Louis for another 21 years. During this time, he was the building
manager for the Laclede Gas Building and a leader in the Building
Owners and Managers Association of Greater St. Louis.
His many hobbies included hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Highland Gun Club, and an enthusiastic supporter of gun and
boating safety. As a retired member of the military, David stayed
active with the Chief Warrant Officer’s Association in St. Louis and
attended annual reunions with his former shipmates. He served as
a Red Cross volunteer at Scott AFB Pharmacy for many years.
David was a charter life member of the Military Officers Association
of America, life member of the United States Naval Institute, and a
life member of the National Rifle Association of America.
David was an active member of the Troy Lion’s Club since 1982,
serving as President and its long-term Secretary for 20 years. He
was instrumental in many of the club’s projects, such as managing
the fish trailer at the Troy Homecoming (with the help of family and
friends), candy sales, charitable requests and donations, and
various other activities which benefited the club’s mission and the
City of Troy. David was a member of the Lions Foundation of
Illinois. He was a Charter member of the Troy Historical Society
and served as a Chairperson for Troy’s Historic Preservation
Committee.
He was a volunteer at the Benjamin Stephenson House in
Edwardsville and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in
Troy. He enjoyed time spent with his family and friends and was
especially proud of his daughters and grandchildren. He was a
great lover of Labrador Retrievers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two
brothers, George and Howard Peverly.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 57 years, Patricia Ann (nee
Shea) Peverly, whom he married April 24, 1965; three beloved
daughters: Christine (Edward) Kovach, Heather (Kevin) Fournie
and Janet Peverly; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a
sister, Elizabeth Schnitzler; a sister-in-law, C. Christine (John)
Marshall; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in Troy officiated by Rev. Dr. Albert Collver
III. Burial with military honors was in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery,
Troy, IL.
