Collinsville High School juniors Khalil Thorps-Watt and Trey Peterson had great showings at the annual Indoor Top Times meet at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington on March 25.
The Top Times meet is the de facto indoor state track and field championships for Illinois.
Thorps-Watt hit a mark of 6.63 meters or 21’ 7 ½ “ to take third place in Class 3A. Brody Squires of Aurora (Waubonsie Valley) won the meet with a jump of 22’ 6”.
Thorps-Watt set both a personal record and a school record in the triple jump with a bound of 13.48 meters or 44’ 2”. That was good enough for fourth place in the competition.
Malik Allen of Edwardsville won the meet at 13.97 meters or 45’ 8”.
It was the second record triple jump of the week for Thorps-Watt as he broke the outdoor school record on March 21 in a dual meet against Granite City.
“He’s working hard and just extremely motivated to do well and break some records,” said CHS coach Darryl Frerker. “That’s exactly what he did yesterday when he broke his own triple jump record. He’s just in a great position right now as we head to the outdoor season.
“It was nice to finish the season with another stellar performance.”
Peterson set a personal record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.49 good enough for eighth place at Top Times.
He came into the meet ranked #18 in the field.
“It was a very exciting race,” said Frerker. “I felt like he ran one of the perfect races that you hope for. He put himself in a great position, ran even splits and just looked tough.
“I thought he was going to get under two, but it’s still an awesome race because of how he ran it.”
Peterson’s time stands at #2 all-time for an indoor meet at CHS. Dominique Manley ran a 1:57.25 in 2010 for the #1 mark.
