Following a 20 win season that culminated in their first Regional title in ten years, Triad softball has returned to the diamond for another campaign.
Last week, the Lady Knights held their home opener against O’Fallon. The Panthers entered the non-conference battle with a 1-1 record.
With sophomore Maddie Hunt taking pitching duties for Triad, the two teams found themselves in a scoreless affair after three innings of play.
The first runs of the season at Triad High School went to the home side in the fourth inning, with four Lady Knights touching home plate. O’Fallon responded with some offense of their own in the top of the fifth, clawing their deficit down to 4-2.
In the sixth inning, the Lady Knights added three more tallies to their total. The Panthers struck back with a run of their own, but ultimately fell 7-3.
Hart went the distance in the win, marking her first career complete game. The sophomore fanned 11 batters in the win.
Chloe Seger led the team’s offensive efforts with two RBI in the victory. Delaney Hess, Phoebe Feldman and Logan Looby drove in a run a piece in the home game.
Three days later, Triad faced off with another Southwestern conference foe. This Mar. 23 trip saw the Lady Knights battle the Belleville East Lancers.
After a scoreless frame from Triad’s Hess and Belleville East’s Ashlynn Samson, the bats came alive in the second inning.
The Lady Knights would drive in four runs with only out, leading to a pitching change for the Lancers. In response, the home team drove in two runs to make the score 4-2.
Triad’s lead held strong until the fourth inning, when the Lancers delivered a six run rally. Hart took to the mound to earn the inning’s final out.
After tallying an unearned run in the fifth, the Lancers went ahead 9-4. The Lady Knights would score twice more in the contest, but fell short in a 9-6 final.
Triad’s RBI would be evenly distributed between Alyssa DeWitte, Syd Horn, Feldman, Hess and Seger tallying one a piece.
The Lady Knights next home contests are scheduled for Mar. 29 against Gillespie and an April 1 doubleheader with Columbia.
