The annual Collinsville Invitational boys track & field meet took place May 6 at Kahok Stadium.
Edwardsville took top honors at the meet edging East St. Louis 93-92 in the final standings. The Kahoks took ninth place in the 26-team field with 22 points.
Field Events
KJ Thorps-Watt took a second and a third place finish in Saturday’s competition.
He placed second in the triple jump with a bound of 13.46 meters or 44’ 2”. Cahokia’s Nicholas DeLoach took the title with a leap of 14.57 meters or 47’ 9 ¾”.
In the high jump, he took third with a mark of 1.95 meters of 6-4 ¾”. DeLoach and Thorps-Watt actually tied at 1.95 meters but the Comanche hit his mark in fewer attempts to win.
“KJ continues to excel going into the post season and we hope his best jumps are yet to come,” said CHS coach Darryl Frerker.
Jo’Viano Howard of Cahokia won with a jump of 2.0 meters or 6-6 ¾ “.
In the discus, Kahok sophomore Devin Habermehl tossed a personal record of 48.37 meters or 158’ 8”. That throw is now the #1 in CHS history for a Freshman or Sophomore.
According to CHS throws coach Chad Burgess and his Twitter feed this is #2 in Illinois for sophomores and #34 in the USA this season.
“His hard work and dedication has paid off with consistency in his throws as he leads the Kahoks into our conf championships! “ said Frerker.
Jonathan Sewell came up with seventh place with a toss of 45.45 meters or 149’ 1”. Finally, Kahok freshman Shane Box came up with a personal record toss of 43.79 meters or 143’ 8”.
The throw by Box is #6 on the all-time fresh/soph list at Collinsville. It is #3 in Illinois this year for freshmen and #25 in the USA this season.
JehChys Brown of Centralia was the top thrower at 53.48 meters or 175’ 5”.
Sewell placed 10th in the shot put marking at 13.83 meters or 45’ 4 ½”. Brown of Centralia came up with another monster throw marking at 18.00 meters or 59’ 0 ¾”.
The Orphan was the Class 2A state champ a year ago in the shot put and finished third in the discus in Class 2A.
Track events
In the 800 meters, Kahok Andrew Gonski ran a personal record of 2:01.90 to take sixth place. Teammate Trey Peterson finished at 2:05.23 for 10th place.
“Andrew is gaining confidence with another PR as we look for him to gain All-Conference honors,” said Frerker.
Justice Eldridge of Bethalto (Civic Memorial) won the event at 1:57.70.
Jalek Nelson took ninth place out of 36 runners in the 400. He ran a time of 52.50. Devion Montgomery of East St. Louis took first at 48.81 seconds.
Finally, the Collinsville 4×400 meter relay team of Nelson, Peterson, Jeremiah Yarbough, and Trent Strong finished ninth with a time of 3:32.92. East St. Louis won in 3:19.61.
Upcoming Schedule
The Kahoks competed in the annual Southwestern Conference meet yesterday however results were unavailable at press time.
Their next meet will be at the Class 3A Bloomington Sectional on May 18.
