Kahok boys garner several All-SWC selections

The 2022-23 IHSA athletic seasons have come to a close with last weekend’s Class 3A and 4A baseball and softball championships which means the Southwestern Conference has also officially released all of their All-SWC teams for the spring season.
Baseball
Collinsville’s diamond men reaped the greatest number of All-SWC selections with seven following after compiling a 16-15 overall record including going 4-6 in the ultra-competitive SWC.
Edwardsville came away with the conference crown and won the Class 4A state championship June 11.
For the Kahoks, dual threat Ethan Bagwell was named to the first team hitting .465 with two home runs and 20 RBI. The junior had a .495 on-base percentage and a .644 slugging percentage.
On the mound, Bagwell was 5-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 40 innings. He struck out 68 hitters and had a WHIP of 1.45.
Adam Bovinett, Kris Alcorn, and Bryce Lemp all received second team honors.
Bovinett hit .342 with a .509 on-base percentage while Alcorn hit .357 with an on-base percentage of .505. He also slugged .557 for the season.
On the mound, Alcorn finished with eight starts in 31.1 innings. He compiled a 2-4 record with 42 strikeouts.
On the All-SWC Honorable Mention team were Kolby Anderson, CJ Schaaf, and Carter Harrington.
Anderson hit .286 with an on-base percentage of .415 for the year. He led the team in runs scored with 23 and tied for the stolen base lead with Harrington at 17 this year.
Harrington, a sophomore, hit .307 with a .409 on-base percentage and slugged .507 on the year. He had a team-high four triples. He also made seven appearances on the mound for CHS with a team-high two saves.
Schaaf hit .357 with an on-base percentage of .396. The senior made eight mound appearances for CHS.
Boys Track and Field
Three Kahoks earned All-SWC honors in track and field.
KJ Thorps-Watt and Ben Stallings each took second place at the annual SWC meet.
Thorps-Watt finished tied for first with SWC champion Curtis Bownes of East St. Louis. Both athletes cleared 1.90 meters or 6’ 2 ¾” However since Bownes cleared the winning height in one attempt and Thorps-Watt took two tries, the championship went to Bownes.
Stallings marked at 3.56 meters or 11’ 8”. Ethan Stukenburg of Edwardsville cleared 4.16 meters or 13’ 7 ¾” to win the conference crown.
Thorps-Watt took third in the conference in the triple jump marking at 12.98 meters or 42-7. Gino Montgomery of Edwardsville took top honors with a bound of 13.65 meters or 44-9 ½. Thanks to his effort Thorps-Watt was named honorable mention All-SWC.
Devin Habermehl, a Kahok sophomore, came up with a toss of 45.71 meters or 149-11 in the discus for third place and a spot on the All-SWC Honorable Mention team.
Lose Epenesa of Edwardsville won with a toss of 50.92 meters or 167-1.
Edwardsville won the SWC meet with 176 points while East St. Louis was second with 129 points.
The Tigers and Hinsdale (Central) tied for fourth place at the IHSA Class 3A state meet while the Flyers scored 79 points to win the Class 2A state title with Cahokia finishing second with 59.
Boys Volleyball
Kahok senior Tyrone Ealy was named second team all-conference in boys volleyball.
The Kahoks finished their second ever varsity season at 12-14 and 2-8 in the SWC.
Ealy had 140 kills for the purple and white.
The Kahoks beat Father McGivney in the first round of the regional before falling to SWC champion O’Fallon in the second round. The Panthers advanced to state where they finished in fourth place.
Tennis
Senior Brad Lentz was named to the second team for boys tennis while Carter Marlin, a sophomore, was listed in the Honorable Mention category.
Lentz was able to pick up a win in the Class 2A Edwardsville sectional. The Tigers won their 22nd straight SWC crown this past season.
