The IHSA released the long-awaited football playoff brackets late on Oct. 21.

Triad, who landed in the southern portion of Class 5A, earned the thirteenth seed in their 16 team pool. That ranking earned the 6-3 Knights a matchup with fourth-ranked and 7-2 Mahomet-Seymour.

Mahomet-Seymour, which is located ten miles northwest of Champaign, will host that contest. Their natural grass field will be the first Triad has played on since a week seven visit to Jersey last season.

The Knights and Bulldogs have three common opponents this season: Mattoon, Mt. Zion and Highland. Both schools proved victorious over Mattoon, with Triad winning 56-20 in week one and Mahomet-Seymour winning 49-6 in week two.

However, their results against Mt. Zion and Highland vary by notable margins.

Mahomet-Seymour scored wins over both, with a 28-0 week two decision over Highland and a 26-7 cruise past Mt. Zion in week six. Triad lost to both of those units, with a 36-7 shortcoming to Highland in week seven and a 39-28 setback to Mt. Zion in week two.

Triad and Mahomet-Seymour have one meeting on record, when the Knights fell 49-14 in the second round of the 2021 postseason. Triad finished that season 8-3 and Mahomet-Seymour wound up 11-1 after dropping their next postseason contest.

The winner of this year’s meeting will advance to play the winner of fifth-seeded Peoria and twelfth-seeded Joliet Catholic. Triad would host a potential second round game with Peoria but would remain on the road against Joliet Catholic.
