MADISON COUNTY — The American Red Cross will be offering some opportunities for people to give much needed blood or platelets during the busy holiday season.

According to a Red Cross press release, from a record number of people expected to travel to seasonal illnesses and the potential for hazardous winter weather, it can be difficult for the Red Cross to collect enough blood for patients during the winter months. As people make travel plans to celebrate with family and friends this year, the American Red Cross asks donors to set aside time to give blood or platelets for patients waiting for care over the holidays.

There are still a couple opportunities to donate blood this month in Madison County. A blood drive will be held from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 27 at Tri-Township Park building, 410 Wickcliffe in Troy. The second and final remaining blood drive in county for the month will be held from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 28 at Moose Lodge 1561, 7371 Marine Road (Route 143) in Edwardsville.

Making a donation during December also provides people with the opportunity to win a $1,000 Amazon gift card.  Making and keeping appointments throughout the month can help safeguard the national blood supply into the new year. Schedule an appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). For more information people may visit redcross.org.
