Three killed in fatal two-car collision, including a Collinsville man

JEFFERSON COUNTY — A fatal two-car crash took the lives of three people, including a Collinsville man, near the crossroads of East DuBois Road and North Pulsar Lane, in Jefferson County.

According to reports from multiple sources, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the report of a crash near Waltonville High School just before midnight Saturday night Dec. 9. Along with JCSO, the Illinois State Police, Litton’s Ambulance, Waltonville, Woodlawn and Jefferson Fire Protections Districts were all on scene lending assistance. 

Joshua Chapman, 37 from Collinsville lost his life, along with Bryce Middleton and Hayden Lence in a head-on collision that took place at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. in Scheller, Illinois. Middleton, 20, of Scheller and his passenger 20-year old Hayden from Herrin were traveling in a 2017 Buick when it veered across the centerline and struck Chapman’s vehicle, a 2023 Chevrolet. Herrin and Hayden after the collision had become trapped in their vehicle and died on the scene. Chapman was also pronounced dead at the scene, per news release.

According to Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse, the cause of death for Lence and Middleton was internal bleeding from blunt force trauma due to the fatal accident. Chapman’s cause of death was also blunt force trauma due to the head on collision.

There was also a 32-year old male passenger traveling with Chapman at the time of the crash who was transported to regional hospital. His medical condition is unknown.

JCSO and ISP’s Investigation Reconstruction Unit have been gathering information and reconstructing the crime scene to further ascertain evidence that led to the fatal accident.

No further information regarding the crash or circumstances involved is being released, at this time because it’s an ongoing investigation.
