Kahok Grapplers battle at Granite City

COLLINSVILLE — There is no more prestigious tourney in the Metro area than the 62nd Red Schmitt Tournament in Granite City.

Collinsville again attended the event on Dec. 27-28.

“If you’re not familiar with the Holiday tournament, that’s the hardest tournament of the year for the boys,” said Collinsville coach Jordan May.

Kahok senior Cody Lutz had the top tournament for CHS finishing in seventh place.

He beat Brady Rose of Waterloo for seventh place thanks to an 11-5 decision.

Lutz also won his opening three matches beating Quinn Zeman of Tinley Park (Andrew) by pin at 1:41, Elijah Kolb of Granite City by pin at 1:18 and Hugh Vanek of Oak Park-River Forest via a 5-2 decision.

He finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.

Jack Shepherd won five matches at 285 to finish ninth.

He opened with a pin over Kamden Hartman of Mt. Vernon at the 1:17 mark. After a pair of defeats, he beat Landon Busch of Triad via medical forfeit.

Shepherd then won his final three matches starting with a 5-4 decision over Terrance Carter of Oak Park-River Forest. He pinned David Williams of Bloomington at the 5:30 mark and finally beat Prosper Livingston-Holmes of Paducah, Ky. (Tilghman) by pin at 2:29.

“He wrestled really, really hard,” said May. “He didn’t medal but he finished in ninth place so one place away from the gold bracket and medaling. So I think next year we can look forward to him medaling.”

Scott Snyder won four matches at 190He beat Lorenzo Hayworth of Willard, Mo. by a 4-2 decision then later he beat CJ Robinson of OPRF at 3:16. He ended with a pin over Jacob Sauer of St. Louis (CBC) at 1:21. 

Rome Richardson won one match in the same weight class.

Stephen Stewart won his final three matches at 150 pounds. 

Stewart beat Brennen Teeter of Belleville East 10-4, Camden Maniatis of Tinley Park (Andrew) by pin at 1:57. He finished the tourney with a win over Remy Tyrrell thanks to a 4-3 decision.

Cameron Minner won three matches at 132 pounds.

He beat Ethan Craft of Willard 5-1, then Jowel Maldonado of Joliet (Central) 2-1 and beat Maldonado again.

Jeddah O’Dell won two matches at 138. He beat Dennis Watts 8-6 then ended the tourney with a win over Dylan Vitale in Wildwood, Mo. (Lafayette) 13-6.

Jordan Thigpen won a pair of matches at 113 pounds. Thigpen beat Tino Nalagan of Lafayette at 3:38 then took the measure of Jace Brown of Granite City 8-7.

Chase Hair won one match at 120 pounds

Quincy Johnson had one win at 285
