TROY — After a hiatus, the Triad Middle School Math Team is bringing a renewed enthusiasm to mathematics competitions throughout the area.

Jennifer Mallette, math department chair and math team coach at Triad High School, along with fellow math coach Beth Frank decided to restart the middle school math team. They estimated that the team has been inactive since 2016.

“We restarted the team this past fall when we decided to take them to a competition at Belleville West High School,” Mallette said. “The team consists of 7th and 8th graders from Triad Middle School, which is the only middle school in the Triad District. There are approximately 12 students involved this year.”

Mallette explained that competitions are different but for the two contests they have participated in so far, students usually take an individual test and then a team test.

“Depending on the number of students who attend the competition, we are usually able to have more than one ‘team’ compete,” Mallette said. “Scores are figured and then awards are announced. The awards ceremony is always fun and exciting.”

Mallette said that both Frank and herself are happy to see students excited about doing math and being successful.

“We feel that the earlier we can get students involved with the math team, the more they will continue to participate once they reach the high school level.  Our goal is to have it help strengthen the high school math team,” Mallette said later adding. “We are very excited to have 7th and 8th graders interested in math. Because of the strong math backgrounds that our district provides, these kids are having success in math when competing against area schools.”

The Triad Middle School Math Team of 7th and 8th graders went to SIUE recently for the MathCounts Competition. The team earned third place overall against all schools in our region. Participating students were Addi Bierman, Eliana Eichenseer, Makenna Day, Greyson Hoyt, Devin Link, Carter Mallette, Ella York, and Riam Young. These students, along with Brad Bauman, Aston Blevins, Rylan Sherwood, and Marlie Wiemers also participated in the Belleville West Competition in the fall where the 7th grade team placed 1st place overall and the 8th grade team placed 1st place overall.
