Glen Carbon Museum to Kick Off Quilt Exhibit

by Kathy Turner

GLEN CARBON — The Glen Carbon Museum will be the home to a quilt exhibition beginning Saturday, April 6 that will feature the museum’s own collection as well as displays provided by a local quilting guild, Ties, Needles and Threads.

The exhibition is being presented in partnership with the Edwardsville Arts Center.

Quilt making is a part of American history. For years community centers, churches and even private homes were the site of seamstresses getting together to socialize and sew together pieces of fabric that would eventually become a quilt.

Ties, Needles and Threads is a group based in Glen Carbon that still gathers to share needle arts each month. A registered not-for-profit organization, they will soon celebrate their 34th birthday. Their more than 50 members gather monthly at the Glen Carbon Community/Senior Center on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Each gathering might include speakers, demonstrations, trunk shows, or just a chance to get togethers, socialize and sew whatever the members might be working on at the time.

The quilt exhibition will kick off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 with an opening reception. The display will be available throughout the month of April and into early May. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closed Friday and open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is located at 124 School Street in Glen Carbon.
