Marine Water Treatment Using Free Chlorine for next 4-6 Weeks
by Stephanie Malench
MARINE — The Marine Village Board met on Aug. 21 and heard a variety of public comments at the beginning of the meeting.
Thaddies Joliff returned to the board to announce that he is now officially an Eagle Scout and provided the village with $120 in extra donations to be used for the Parks Department.
John Molitor reported that the water and sewer district will reimburse the village the $93,000 for replacing the transfer switches and alarms for the pump stations since insurance denied the claim after the spring storms.
Dennis Weber came to give an update on the 100th Anniversary Hard Road Car Cruise scheduled to run from Marine to St. Jacob and back. Fifty cars have been registered so far.
Myron Potthast came to get an update on progress connecting the Grandview Estates apartments to the rest of the village. Mayor Kelly Tracy said it will be several years and the village continues applying for grants to pay for the $300,000 project but none have been approved.
In committee reports, the street department is patching around the manholes and areas that were dug up for the sewer lining project in preparation for oil and chipping the week of Sept. 3.
Police and Health Chair Mark Voigt reported that he and Police Chief Brent Stewart had a good meeting with Utility about the new body cameras required by Jan. 1, 2025. Instead of purchasing the cameras outright for $30,000, they can lease them for a minimum of five years. If the village gets a grant during the lease to purchase the cameras, they can apply the amount from the lease towards the purchase.
The water department is temporarily running free chlorine through the system for the next 4-6 weeks. Residents are asked not to be alarmed if they notice a strong chlorine smell.
Finally, the board approved spending no more than $560 for the purchase of four new batteries for the solar panels that run the water filtration systems at Lake Park. A letter requesting the Sheriff’s Department to resume providing volunteer workers for the Park District was also approved.
Upcoming events announced include:
- September 7- Barn Dance for Little Rae of Sunshine
- September 13 and 14- KC Club Tootsie Roll sales at the intersection of West Division and North Duncan.
- September 28- Little Rae of Sunshine collecting donations at the intersection of West Division and North Duncan.
