Budget Approval Highlights Glen Carbon Board’s Final Meeting of the Year

by Kathy Turner

The Glen Carbon Village Board met for the final time in 2024 and opened the meeting with a public hearing on the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget. The budget had been published for review prior to the meeting. There being no discussion, the FY 25 budget was approved as presented to the Board.

In other business, the Board approved the auction of a 2008 New Holland Backhoe and a truck from the Public Works Department. Both vehicles will be offered for auction as surplus property with the proceeds going to the general operations fund.

The Board also approved the 2024 Tax Levy in the amount of $3,487,619. It represented an 8.14% increase in the amount expected to be collected over the prior year. The final tax rate cannot be determined until the Spring of 2025 when the County released the estimated assessed valuations. It is estimated that the average homeowner with a $300,000 valuation on their home will see a $13 to $35 increase in their Village taxes.

Finally, the Board approved an amendment to last year’s budget ordinance with the final end-of-year numbers. It is the result of a review of the budget as of the end of November and anticipated needs through year-end. Trustee Maliszewski noted that the Village continues to see balanced budgets as well as continued investments in things such as parks and green spaces.

The next meeting of the Board will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
