In a letter to American Legion Post 708 members dated June 16, 2025, Commander Vern Haggitt informed the post’s membership it will likely close in August.

“Due to the fact that we don’t have enough active members, we will surrender our charter,” Haggitt wrote.

A reporter attempted to contact the legion by phone but was unable to reach anyone.

A final, members-only vote will be taken on the matter on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at the legion’s hall, located at 104 N. Main Street in Troy. Haggitt said the post has three choices:

  • Merge with St. Jacob’ American Legion Post 665, giving it the Troy Legion’s building and any leftover funds
  • Sell the Troy post then merge with St. Jacob and give that post any remaining money
  • Walk away from Post 708 and give everything to District 22

Haggitt pointed out that the Troy Legion can donate any of its finances to eligible charities or Legion programs but they cannot divide funds or give any of Post 708’s monies to members. They also cannot pay any of their members’ bills or give members any Legion finances.

Because they are surrendering their charter, Haggitt said that the Post 708 will vanish. It would not, for example, become Post 665-708.
