Kahok girls go 1-4 after competing in Nashville Invitational

By Mark Jurgena

It was a tough go of things for the Collinsville High School girls’ basketball team at the Nashville girls Invitational Tournament last week. CHS dropped all three contests and one the week prior.

They stand at 1-4 in the early season.

Close SHG loss

To finish the tourney on Nov. 26, Collinsville fought back to take the lead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on as Springfield (Sacred Heart-Griffin) beat the Kahoks 50-45.

The Cyclones went 11-for-15 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

That final stanza featured four ties and four lead changes including a traditional three-point play by SHG with 2:06 to play to make it a 44-43 game and put the Cyclones up for good.

Unfortunately, that lead came on the heels of two straight possessions where the Kahoks had a chance to increase their lead but couldn’t.

Collinsville trailed 35-24 late in the third and was still down six points at the end of the quarter before an early fourth quarter run.

CHS had the first six points of the quarter on their way to an 11-3 run.

Aubrey Bordini hit two shots to begin the fourth to cut the lead to 36-34 with 6:08 to play.

Darianna Morris tied the game with a coast-to-coast layup at the 5:40 mark, but SHG quickly regained a three-point lead over the next two possessions.

But the Kahoks struck quickly to regain the lead.

Karley Call buried a three from the left wing to tie the game at 39-39, then Morris stole the inbounds pass and made the layup for a 41-39 lead with 3:50 to play.

The teams traded buckets with Collinsville taking its final lead at 43-41 when Karly VanDyke hit a bucket for two of her team-high 13 points at the 2:20 mark.

Collinsville went 6-for-18 shooting, a 33 percent clip, in the fourth quarter while SHG was 2-for-10 for 20 percent in the same frame.

For the game, Bordini added 10 points while Morris had team highs with three assists and three steals.

Okawville loss

On Nov. 25, Collinsville fell to Okawville 56-25 at the Nashville Tourney.

CHS trailed only 8-7 after one quarter but fell behind 25-14 at the half.

The Rockets extended their lead to 38-23 after three before piling up a big fourth quarter.

Karley Call led CHS with 10 points and nine rebounds on the night with Morgan Harris-Golliday adding four.

VanDyke had three assists with Ashley Janini adding three steals.

Freeburg loss

On Nov. 21, Collinsville dropped a 52-34 decision to Freeburg at Nashville.

The Kahoks only trailed by one 24-23 at the half before being outscored 16-5 in the third quarter and 12-6 in the fourth.

Call, Janini and VanDyke all had nine points for the Kahoks while Nyla Scott scored four.

VanDyke had eight rebounds with Morris grabbing six.

Call had five steals while VanDyke had three assists.

CHS Schedule

Collinsville crossed the river on Dec. 2 for a contest with the Pattonville Pirates in Maryland Heights, Missouri. They are at Alton on Dec. 4 and at Belleville East on Dec. 9.
