Glen Carbon Public Works Department remains busy in winter

By Kathy Turner • The winter months do not mean a lack of activity for the public works department in Glen Carbon. Besides dealing with snow and road work, the department is planning for spring and summer projects.

Tuesday’s board meeting saw the approval of several projects for the department. A resolution was passed approving the services of Vandevanter Engineering for the Ginger Creek Lift Station retrofitting. Total cost is $175,580 and includes new control panels, pumps, floats, pressure transducer and miscellaneous upgrades.

Juneau Associates, Inc. will begin sanitary sewer smoke testing on approval by the board. The testing will help determine if there are any leaks or cracks in the system that must be addressed.

The board also approved engineering services from TWM, Inc. for the Main Street Sewer Phase II Project. This will be for the area between School Street and Meridian Road. Phase I is currently underway with completion due this year. The design of Phase II is expected later in 2026 with a 2027 completion date.

Public Works director Scott Slemer requested approval to offer his support of the Madison County Environmental Grant Application on behalf of the village. If approved, Glen Carbon will receive approximately $5,280. The funds will be used to stabilize the Miner Creek Park bank that has some erosion.

Finally, the board approved the sale of surplus property for the department. Offered at auction will be a dump truck and snowplow that has been in service for 29 years.
