Freelance Reporter • With just two months to go, we are seeing more activities in our communities recognizing the 250th birthday of our nation. Some have even tied the celebration to other events in the community.
On Saturday, April 25 the Village of Glen Carbon recognized Arbor Day with the planting of a tree at city hall. Village Administrator Jamie Bowden led the festivities and read a proclamation recognizing the day. The village’s gardening, landscaping and enhancing nature (G.L.E.N.) committee members were on hand along with members of the Edwardsville High School National Honor Society.
The group planted a Sun Valley red maple tree near the village’s sign. In addition to the tree, the event was marked with a sign that recognized the day and the 250th anniversary of the country.
In Maryville, the Community Improvement board has initiated a Patriotic Decorating Day in honor of the birthday of the country. Residents are encouraged to decorate their yard or business in celebration of the holiday. Entry forms are available to nominate members of the community for judging which will take place on May 18. This is not a lighted contest. Entry forms can be found on the village website.
