The Triad Knights football team held their annual scrimmage this past Friday night.
The evening featured a matchup of freshman and sophomores, as well as the junior varsity squad competing against their varsity counterparts.
The 7 and 8 grade teams also squared off as the kickoff for the night. Through all of the games, players looked sharp and ready for the season to start next week against the Mattoon Green Wave.
One exemplary of this was the varsity kicker Travis Speer. During field goal practice, he was perfect through his first seven kicks, which included distances of 25,30,40, and 45 yards.
His only misses of the night came while attempting kicks from 50 yards out and none of those attempts were too far off the mark.
The varsity offense ran a total of 15 plays and 3 of those were passes.
The first pass was a completion from Logan Wongler to Hunter Ford on the opening play. Later on a pass was attempted to Luke Foreman and another pass was thrown to Roger Wolf, who caught the pass and tacked on extra yards with some elusive moves.
A trio of touchdowns came with the varsity on the field from Luke Foreman, Josh Edison, and Andrew Gula.
The varsity team faces the Mattoon Green Wave at home on Friday where they will try and avenge their 28-23 loss last year.
That lose last year was especially tough as the team dropped a game winning pass on the last play and it was also their first loss to Mattoon in four years.
Two of Mattoon’s players to watch next week are their running backs, Abraham Baker and Jakai Johnson. The freshman/sophomore football team will travel to Mattoon for an 11 a.m. game on Saturday.
