First year coach Jessica Ledford and her charges have begun the 2019 season on an even note with a win over Mascoutah and a loss to Belleville West. Both matches were played in Collinsville.
The win over Mascoutah included three singles victories where Kahok netters did not drop a game. In their doubles wins they dropped a total of three games.
“I think we have a pretty solid team. I don’t think there’s a decline in players. I think we have a strong lower half of our team. Our five and six players are pretty strong compared to years past and also compared to other teams,” said Ledford.
Those two players are freshman Alyssa Garcia and sophomore Abbi Olsson.
The Kahoks did not fare as well against perennial power Belleville West losing 9-0. A bright spot did come at five singles when Garcia won her first set and sent the third set to a tiebreaker before falling.
“Our conference in tennis is so strong. The teams are amazing. Edwardsville, West, East, and O’Fallon are all super dominant and such tough competition, and actually Alton is too, which is awesome for our girls,” Ledford noted.
CHS has only one senior on this year’s squad. That is Allie Moore who has been playing #2 singles and #1 doubles.
Among the other varsity starters is #1 singles player junior Lindsey Taylor, #3 singles is sophomore Anna Falbe and #4 singles is sophomore Loghan Phetsadasack.
“I am looking forward to developing our girls for the next season and also I am looking forward to seeing their progress within this season.”
