Kahok Wrestlers Earn Big Win Over East

By Mark Jurgena, Reporter

Coach Joe Bevis and his Collinsville wrestlers raised their SWC record to 3-1 last week with a 53-24 win at Belleville East.

Because of lower numbers at East, CHS took 11 forfeits between the varsity and JV meets.

“Our kids went out and they wrestled really well. We had about a 45 minute practice before the meet. The kids weren’t necessarily into it and I let them know that this was going to make us better. (They) will have tough matches but we can’t completely waste a day if you don’t have a match. They turned it around and had a great practice,” Bevis said.

Jalen May scored a tech fall and Ian Freeman registered a pin for CHS.

Freeman has been a backup for most of the season.

“You can just really see his confidence grow. He won a best two out of three over Cameron Varner to take the 126 lb. varsity spot. But then Gannen Kane was out and Varner challenged up to 132 and won that varsity spot. He got a tech fall as well. Neither one of them got too high about gaining a spot or too low about losing a spot. Both just took advantage of their opportunity and got us big wins vs. East,” Bevis said.

Joe Biciocchi, Garrett Lee, Zach Blaha and Kenny Lutz each won their matches.

Austin Stewart wrestled Dominic Thebeau tough during his match but ended up getting pinned. Jake Gregory bumped up a weight class and wrestled well but was pinned by Adam Thebeau.

Today both the varsity and JV team (who beat East 70-8) will host Belleville West. It is also Jr. Kahok night at CHS.
