Metro East Recreational Baseball League Fall Season Off To Strong Start As Collinsville 5 Downs Edwardsville 1 In Offensive Battle

The Metro East Recreational Baseball League had another big week for their Fall Ball Season, including an impressive 11 game slate over the weekend. One of those 11 games was a contest between Collinsville team #5(the Metro-East Knights) and Edwardsville team #1. The contest was held in Edwardsville at Metro-East Lutheran High School.

As the visitors for the matchup, the Knights went to bat first. They set the tone for the game early with a leadoff single, which was followed by a walk. Another single drove in a runner to make the score 1-0.

Following a runner reaching on an error and a passed ball, Collinsville managed to extend their lead to 3-0. Another pair of singles added to the score to go up 4-0. Edwardsville managed to stop the bleeding however and end the inning with a strikeout before any more damage could be done.

Edwardsville’s offense kicked off the bottom of the first with a hard hit grounder and a deep shot to center, but the Knight’s defense managed to turn both of those plays into outs. Collinsville managed to have a 1-2-3 inning by striking out the next batter.

Collinsville picked up where they left off on offense and started the second inning with three walks to load the bases. A deep hit ball to left field seemed to deliver more runs for the Knights, but it was caught and no runners managed to advance. The next two batters were turned into outs by Edwardsville, who also surrendered no more runs.

Starting to feel the momentum shift, Edwarsdville’s offense came alive in the second inning. They started off with a pair of singles and a grounder followed to narrow the lead to 4-1. A walk and a strikeout came after, leaving the bases loaded with one out.

A passed ball allowed the score to tighten as Edwardsville scored a runner to go down 4-2. Another walk followed, which loaded the bases yet again. Edwardsville took advantage of this scoring opportunity and hit a bases clearing single to take a 5-4 lead over the Knights. This did prove to be the end of the scoring for the second inning however.

The Knights came back with a vengeance in the third inning as they hit a leadoff double and stole third after an overthrow to second. A groundout gave Edwardsville their first out of the inning, but also advanced the runner to tie the score at 5-5.

Collinscille kept rolling via a single and a walk in the next two at bats. A passed ball allowed both of these runners to advance and be in scoring position with only one out. The next batter came up big with a double to send one run in, but another runner was caught out at home, leaving the score at 6-5 in favor of Collinsville.

That proved to be the end of the offensive flurry for the Knights. They kept their momentum rolling in the bottom of the third, as they performed their second 1-2-3 inning of the day.

In yet another strong start to an inning, the Knights lead of the fourth inning with three of their first four batters reaching base to load the bases. This was followed by a HBP and a groundout, which both scored a runner. Those scores extended the lead to 8-5, which is where it remained for the top of the fourth.

After their first batter popped out, Edwardsville hit a single and drew a walk in the bottom of the fourth. Both runners managed to steal a base to enter scoring position, but the next batter was struck out for the second out of the inning. In the crucial at bat that followed, Edwardsville hit a bases clearing single to trim the Knight’s lead to 8-7. The defense managed to strike the next batter however to keep their lead intact.

The fifth inning began with a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases for Collinsville. A strikeout followed, but the Knights hit a single in the next at bat to drive in a pair of runners and go up 10-7. Taking advantage to back to back passed balls, the Knights strengthened their lead to 11-7. Another run was tallied after a well-hit single by the Knights, which was their last run of the inning.

In a do or die situation in the bottom of the fifth, Edwardsville started off strong with a pair of singles. Unfortunately for them, the defense turned a double play on the next play to leave Edwardsville with only one out left. The next runner reached on error and drove a run in to trim the lead down to 12-8. But the Knights struck out the next batter to win the game by a final score of 12-8.
