For the first time since 1974, Triad High School has an IHSA State Champion wrestler.
Sophomore Colby Crouch joined Fritz Nemsky on the exclusive list tonight, taking home the 2A 120 pound crown.
The now 38-0 grappler jumped out to an early 3-2 lead after one period of action and extended it to 4-2 after another.
Peyton Cox of Washington began fighting back in the third and final period, tying things up at 4-4. With only 15 seconds remaining, Crouch picked up what would be the deciding point off of an escape to take a 5-4 victory.
Crouch is now only the fifth individual to win an IHSA state title, joining the likes of the aforementioned Nemsky, Erin Wykoff, Elizabeth Hampl, and Adam Nelson.
Two other Knights also hit the mat at this week’s State Finals. Senior Chase Hall recorded a 3-2 win by decision in the opening round and then lost via a 3-2 score the following round. Fellow Senior Jordan Clines also competed this weekend and lost by pin fall after 3:56.
