Troy Police arrested a Collinsville man June 14 on suspicion of drug and firearm crimes after the suspect allegedly tried to flee officers in a mechanically-failing vehicle.
Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office on Thursday charged 25-year-old Brendan L. Day, who is currently in custody at the county jail, with unlawful possession of more than 15 grams of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and fleeting or attempting to elude a police officer.
Associate circuit judge Ryan Jumper set bail on the recent charges at $100,000.
Court records show Day has a criminal history which includes prior convictions for methamphetamine, weapons violations and attempting to flee police.
Troy Police arrest reports show dispatchers alerted officers about 3:26 p.m. a white sedan had just struck a curb at the intersection of U.S. Highway 40 and Formosa Road. Officers arrived at the scene and saw a trail of fluid leading to a car matching the description on U.S. Highway 40 west of Alarth Drive.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and the car turned and began traveling west, according to the report. The car then turned south onto Formosa Road – failing to yield to emergency lights and sirens. Smoke was coming from the vehicle, which was traveling at a speed of about 35-miles-per hour, as it continued to West Kirsch Road.
On West Kirsch Road, the car appeared to have a mechanical failure and stopped, according to the report. Officers ordered Day out of the car and onto the ground where he was placed in handcuffs. When he stood up, police reported a bag containing 17.9 grams of a substance which tested positive for methamphetamine fell to the ground.
Day told police there was a handgun on the front seat, which he was barred from possessing due to prior felony convictions.
During booking, Day stated he got scared when he saw emergency lights and knew he was going back to prison, according to the report.
