Glen Carbon Board Hears Annual Report from Museum Coordinator
by Kathy Turner
GLEN CARBON — The Glen Carbon Village Board on Tuesday, July 23 received the annual update on the Heritage Museum from Coordinator Samantha Doolin. She began by outlining some of the current projects at the museum.
Volunteers have a long-term project underway that will inventory, catalog and organize all of the items in the museum. They are also working at the Yanda Log Cabin Garden, along with the G.L.E.N. Committee, to maintain a period-appropriate garden for the community.
Other projects include self-guided tour materials that can be used by visitors, setting up new exhibits and programs, and trying to go through Village government records that are more than 50 years old to glean out information about the past businesses, residents and other items of interest to the community.
Finally, they are working on setting up a display in room three that will resemble the general store fronts that lined Glen Carbon’s main street. The display will be geared toward children and will allow them to interactively play in settings that would have been seen historically in Glen Carbon.
Doolin also spoke of the increase in Facebook followers and visitors to the online exhibits.
The Heritage Museum is open Monday through Thursday and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Friday and Sunday. The museum closes from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. for lunch each of these days.
Doolin encourages anyone interested in volunteering to visit the website and check out the opportunities section that outlines volunteer options and an application. The website can be found on the village website, www.glencarbonil.gov, under the Your Community section. This is a great way to learn more about the community while benefiting the Museum.
In other business the Board approved two ordinances. The first updates the Village Energy Conservation Code to match that of the State of Illinois. The second clarifies information about accumulation of vegetation on village properties. The ordinance states that residents have 10 days after cutting, removal, severing and/or fall of vegetation to remove the items from the property before fines may be implemented.
The next meeting of the Board will be held on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.
