TROY – When the IHSA announced that football teams were permitted to scrimmage another school the week before the season opened, Triad Coach Calvin Potthast was quick to find an opponent: the Edwardsville Tigers.

“When they passed the rule back in February, I called Coach Pickering. I wanted to see the best team that we could around that wasn’t on our schedule. He agreed to it and we thought it would be a great thing for the communities and I think tonight turned out pretty good for both of them,” the Knights’ manager said of the matchup.

The evening featured matchups between the Madison County schools on several levels, concluding with a varsity against varsity scrimmage. Per IHSA limitations, the teams each ran a pair of 12 play sequences on offense.

Coach Potthast recapped the scrimmage, “It was good. We stayed healthy, which is the biggest thing. We got all 117 in our program reps tonight.”

Their action against Edwardsville also served as a warm up for Triad’s season opener against Granite City. Their first contest of the 2024 season is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Aug. 30 in Granite City.
“They’ll have a lot of energy with their new coach in the program. They always have good athletes–that will be a challenge to us that we don’t see all the time. They’ll be well coached and prepared,” Triad’s manager previewed their week one opponent.

The Warriors have struggled in recent years, with their last victory coming in week four of their 2022 campaign.

This season, Granite City will be under the leadership of Steve Roustio. Roustio took over of head coach of the program for the final two games of the 2023 season.
