Sirens Broken on South Side of Marine

by Stephanie Malench

The Marine Village Board met on January 15 with Trustee Darren Apken serving as Mayor Pro Tem for Kelly Tracy.

The only public comment was a question from John Molitor about how much gravel was recovered by bringing in a sweeper after the last oil and chip to repair the roads from the sewer relining project. Apken said between 15 and 20 tons was reclaimed for future use.

The weather siren on the south side of the village is broken. All six speakers are blown out and need replaced along with a new 60-foot cable. The estimated cost for the parts, labor, and a lift truck is $16,000. The board is going to wait and see if they can get a grant from Madison County Emergency Management in April.

The board approved replacing the motor on one of the lawnmowers for $1900 plus shipping from Ebay. The cost to rebuild the motor would be $3,000 and a new one would cost $15,000.

Marine resident Laura Dodds will be delivering fliers door to door for AG Telco about signing up for the new fiberoptic lines. Dodds will have a solicitor’s permit. There is no commitment. The form asks for name, address, phone number, and which plan the resident is interested in. The company just wants a rough headcount of interest, and if there is enough, the plan is for AG Telco to start the franchise agreement with the village this summer.

The next meeting is February 5 at 7 pm.
