Marine Board Approves Tank Park as stop for Gold Star 500 Sept. 27

By Stephanie Malench • The Marine Village Board met on July 2 and held several discussions that will lead to votes at later meetings. The first discussion item was about selling the police department’s Chevy Tahoe with a dog cage in the back. Police committee chair Mark Voigt said a resident approached him wanting to buy the vehicle. While the board agreed it should be sold, they decided to do additional research to vote next meeting on conditions of sale and to sell through closed bids.

The other discussion item was about building a sidewalk on North Duncan. While the minimum requirement is for 36 inches, it was recommended it be at least 48 inches so groups of people can walk side-by-side or in both directions without having to step off the sidewalk. There was also some discussion on whether it should only be one block or the full length of the park. Nine trees will have to be removed in one block with three of the stumps needing to be ground out.

A couple board members and the village hall received phone calls that a new homeowner put a shed in their yard that does not meet the ordinance requirements and no permit was requested. Village Clerk Amber Kapp said she would send them a letter notifying them of the requirements. Kapp said even if the board approves the shed, consent will be required by the neighbor since the lot is small and will encroach on the property line.

The board approved permitting the Gold Star 500 to use the park pavilion again this year as a rest stop on Sept. 27. The riders will be lead by the Illinois State Police and will arrive at approximately 12:58 p.m. Their stop will not interfere with Balloons Over Marine going on the same day.

There have been no updates on the sewer relining repairs around the manhole covers or when the manhole along the bike path will be repaired.

During public comment, John Molitor informed the board that all requested funds have been transferred from the sanitary sewer board to the village water and sewer account for the transfer switches and lift station pumps.

The next board meeting will be July 16 at 7 p.m. in village hall.
