Joe’s Market Basket offers tips on choosing the best Christmas greenery

O’FALLON—Nothing marks the start of the Christmas season quite like going out with family and coming home with a real Christmas tree, filling the house with the distinctive smell of the holidays. Picking out a tree is a staple of the season for families around St. Louis and the Metro East and Joe’s Market Basket General Manager Andy Klos has tips on how to select the best one this year.

“Families who come into our store always talk about the scent of a real Fraser fir and how it brings back nostalgic memories of past Christmases,” Klos said. “When picking out a tree, you want to come into the store knowing how much space you have in your home. This makes selecting the correct size and shape a lot easier without worrying if it will fit when you get home. Also, make sure to check the branches for freshness. You want needles that snap, not bend, and you want a slight sticky feel on the trunk.”

Joe’s Market Basket offers a unique tree experience for those picking out their Christmas greenery. They hang their trees from the ceiling instead of having them sit on the ground, which allows families to rotate the trees 360 degrees and inspect all sides before making a purchase. Klos added another way to test the freshness of a tree is to gently tap or tug a branch to see how many needles fall to the ground. The fewer needles that fall, the better. Joe’s Market Basket also has thoughtful ways to involve those who are no longer here to celebrate Christmas.

“The holidays can be a challenging time for some families as they remember family members and friends who have passed away,” Klos said. “We also have a beautiful selection of grave blankets, crosses and wreaths to remember and honor those who won’t be able to celebrate with us this year. Christmas is truly a time about family and a tree is just one part of the important greenery for the holidays.”

The grave blankets, crosses and wreaths are made with evergreen branches and feature bows and other accents to make a beautiful piece for families. The trees and other holiday greenery arrived at Joe’s Market Basket locations during the week of Thanksgiving.
