Semi-truck carrying spuds overturns at 55-270 interchange

Updated at 12:40 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2025 with information from the Troy Fire Protection District.

TROY – A tractor-trailer hauling potatoes skidded off of a ramp and overturned Dec. 27 at the Interstate 55-270 interchange, closing it for about 3.5 hours.

Per Troy Fire Protection District Chief Darren Davis, “We were dispatched to Interstate 270 and Interstate 55 for a report of a tractor-trailer rollover with injuries. The department responded with chief, engine, heavy rescue and tender vehicles, along with one Advanced Life Support ambulance.

“On arrival, we found a tractor-trailer lying on the driver’s side with the trailer broken apart,” Davis said. “The driver was located outside the vehicle, being attended to by the Illinois State Police (ISP). EMS attended to the driver and the fire department secured the truck for any potential hazards. Fire department members assisted EMS with the patient due to the location of the truck and the patient being approximately 75 feet off and down the embankment. No extrication or fire suppression was required. EMS transported the patient for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries. The scene was turned over to the ISP for crash details and recovery of the truck and trailer from the embankment. All fire units returned to service.”

According to Trooper Shannon Barrea of the ISP, a preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: officers from Troop 8 responded to the location listed above for a single-vehicle rollover crash involving a truck-tractor semi-trailer (TT-ST).

Just before 2 p.m., the TT-ST traveled eastbound on I-270, with the driver intending to take to the ramp to northbound I-55 when it lost control, skidded off of the left side of the ramp, went down the embankment and rolled onto its left side, causing the trailer to break open and spill potatoes. During the crash, the TT-ST also struck a yellow cautionary arrow sign on the ramp’s right shoulder.

The driver of the TT-ST was taken to a local hospital with injuries. At approximately 1:49 p.m. the ramp was closed due to the crash. At approximately 5:15 p.m. the ramp re-opened. ISP says there is no further information available at this time.
