Kahok girls beat Belleville West, Pattonville

Collinsville put in a solid effort and beat Belleville West 50-42 in a Southwestern Conference battle on Jan. 6 at Fletcher Gym
The Kahoks used some hot shooting in the opening quarter, then some hot defense in the third to take an 11-point lead before settling for the eight-point win.
West had only one lead in the contest thanks to a 7-0 run to begin the third quarter, but Collinsville immediately put a stop to it.
CHS went on a 17-3 run over the next 3:29 of the third to open up a 44-31 lead.
The extended 1-3-1 Kahok zone defense caused fits for the Maroons, forcing six turnovers during the big Kahok scoring spree.
For the quarter, West committed 11 turnovers.
Aubrey Bordoni got the run started to give CHS a 29-28 lead, while Jayla Wysinger finished it off with her second 3-pointer of the run at the 42-second mark to give the Kahoks that 12-point lead.
But the Maroons weren’t done, they hit the final bucket of the third then continued on for six straight points to begin the fourth to make it a 44-39 game before the Kahok defense kicked in once again.
CHS went on a 6-0 run that included three straight West turnovers to get back to a 50-40 advantage. VanDyke had four points while Wysinger hit a driving layup in the spree.
The rest of the contest the only bucket was made by West to finish off the scoring.
For Collinsville, VanDyke had 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals, with Wysinger adding 11.
Darianna Morris had four steals as did Addison Muniz. The latter added four rebounds and three blocked shots.
Aubrey Bordoni had four rebounds and three blocked shots.
Janini had eight points, five assists and four rebounds.
Pattonville win
Collinsville beat Maryland Heights, Mo. (Pattonville) 50-40 on Jan. 9 at Fletcher Gym.
Pattonville dominated early, taking a 15-8 lead after one and despite CHS outscoring them 9-3 in the second quarter, the Pirates still led 18-17 at the half.
But the Kahoks won the second half, taking a 28-25 advantage after three, then winning the game in the fourth, outscoring the Missouri school 22-15.
Janini led CHS with 15 points while Bordoni added 12.
“We have just been battling all year and getting two wins was huge for the girls,” said CHS Colin Moore. “We know we have to pressure to help jumpstart our offense. Honestly, I’m proud of how hard the girls worked. When we can handle the ball, good things have been happening lately. Some younger players have really stepped up lately. Looking forward to a strong finish to the season.”
MICDS Tourney
Once again this season, Collinsville crossed the river to compete in the Don Mauer MICDS Tournament over the Christmas break.
In the opener, they lost to MICDS, the eventual tournament champions, 62-21 on Dec. 26. VanDyke had seven points, two rebounds and two steals. Wysinger had five points.
In the Consolation semifinals on Dec. 27, CHS beat Clayton, Mo., 43-24.
Karley Call led the purple and white with 13 points and five rebounds, with VanDyke dropping 11 and eight. Morgan Harris-Golliday also had five rebounds.
Janini had three assists and Darianna Morris had four steals
Finally, they lost to Chesterfield, Mo. (Parkway North) 60-29 for the Consolation championship on Dec. 30.
For CHS, VanDyke led in scoring with seven points, while Bordoni had six points and four blocks. Janini added six markers.
Allison Fox had 10 rebounds with Muniz dishing out a team-high two assists.
Edwardsville loss
Lost 50-16 at Edwardsville on Jan. 8. Janini led the Kahoks with seven points.
Muniz had six rebounds and two steals. Bordoni grabbed four boards.
CHS Schedule
Collinsville was at East St. Louis on Tuesday but the results of that contest were unavailable at press time.
They return to action Jan. 15 by hosting the 12th-ranked team in Class 4A, Alton. They host Granite City on Jan. 21.
