Market & Main’s owners aim for May opening in Troy

By Charles Bolinger

Editor • If you’ve driven past or tried to find daytime parking near the former American Legion headquarters lately, you have noticed the beehive of activity.

Laborers were busy again on March 18 when a reporter visited with Evan and Gina Buchholz, to get an update on Troy’s newest restaurant.

Called Market & Main to reflect its location, the co-owners are shooting for an opening sometime in May.

They anticipate employing between 40 and 45 people at the new site, which will be closed on Mondays but be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays may be brunch hours only. That is one of many decisions still to be made. Another item that is to be decided is the menu. Evan was not ready to divulge any delicious details. The only hint is that it will include comfort food with intention.

There should be room for about 80 diners inside with no outside seating planned but the couple already have a garage door that can be rolled up for a more airy environment. Future orders will likely be available for pickup but no delivery service is planned at this time, they said.

They also want to focus on getting Market & Main off the ground before focusing on what will fill the third space in the building; Country Financial is on the south side, facing Market Street.

“The reason we didn’t call it Cleveland Heath is because those are not our last names. We love CH but are also excited to start something from the ground up.” Gina said. “We are not restrained by someone else’s history here,” she continued.

Evan agreed.

“Stepping out from the umbrella of Cleveland Heath and to be who I have wanted to be my entire career,” he said of Market & Main.

The couple declined to have a reporter photograph the interior as they don’t believe it’s photo-ready yet. Workers swarmed around, hammering, using power tools and more as they worked on the interior.

Gina said she is originally from the Troy area; she left in 2017.

“It’s amazing how much the city has grown and changed since I left,” she said. “We are just as excited as they are,” Gina said of the city officials and residents who cannot wait for the restaurant to open. “We appreciate the support we have received already, even though we haven’t opened yet.”

With the Palenqué Mexican Restaurant across Main and other new businesses downtown along with the return of the Troy-Maryville-St.Jacob-Marine Chamber of Commerce’s First Fridays on May 1, parking has swiftly become hard to find at certain times of the day. To aid that, the city plans to demolish the home at 107 N. Main St. to yield at least 30 additional parking spaces. City officials own the home and the current residents are paid up through March 31 as they finalize their move to another house in town.

The Times-Tribune will return to Market and Main in late April to get the rest of the details ahead of the restaurant’s grand opening.
