Maryville’s second roundabout now open at Route 162, Keebler Road
By Tribune Staff • The Village of Maryville announces that the newly constructed second roundabout at the intersection of Route 162 and Keebler Road officially opened to traffic on April 9.
This milestone marks the culmination of more than a decade of planning, collaboration and commitment to improving public safety and traffic flow within the community. The Village of Maryville worked closely with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), neighboring communities, Juneau Associates, Inc., P.C. Engineering Firm, and numerous stakeholders to bring this important project to fruition.
The initiative for this project began following a tragic, fatal crash on July 31, 2015, involving Abigail “Abby” McElroy. In honor of Abby’s memory and with a shared commitment to preventing future tragedies, this project became a top priority for local and state leaders.
A memorial plaque has been installed at the roundabout in Abby’s honor. The plaque reads:
“At this place, a vibrant life was taken too soon. Abby brought joy, laughter and light to all who knew her. This marker stands not only in remembrance, but as a reminder to cherish every moment and one another. Forever loved. Forever missed.”
The newly opened roundabout is designed to significantly enhance roadway safety by reducing vehicle speeds and minimizing the risk of severe collisions. In addition to improving safety, the roundabout will also help ease congestion and improve overall traffic efficiency at one of Maryville’s busiest intersections.
“Today represents not only the completion of a major infrastructure project but also a meaningful step forward in our ongoing mission to protect the lives of our residents and visitors,” said Mayor Wayne White. “This roundabout stands as a lasting tribute to Abby McElroy and reflects what can be accomplished when communities come together with a shared purpose.”
The village extends its sincere appreciation to all partners, engineers, contractors, and community members who contributed to the successful completion of this project.
