Softball Team Beats Miners, Breese Cougars

The Triad softball team recently won three games in a row and improved its overall record to 7-3.

On Tuesday, March 26, the Lady Knights banged out 10 hits on their way to a 14-2, short-game rout of the Gillespie Miners in Troy.

Leading the attack for the Lady Knights was Isabelle Lehan, who went 3-for-3 in the game with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

Going 3-for-4 in the game for the Lady Knights was Payton Bode, who had a double and two runs batted in. Caroline Lehan had a hit and a walk in three plate appearances. She collected three RBIs in the contest.

Of the Lady Knights’ 10 hits, seven were singles while the remaining three were doubles. In addition to the safeties provided by Bode and the Lehans, Triad got a hit apiece from Jenna Bohnenstiehl, Kailey Daniel and Sydney Wildhaber.

The Knights drew six walks and profited from four Gillespie errors.

Liz Young and Ella Moore split the pitching duties against the Miners. Young started and went the first four innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk. She struck out two hitters. Moore worked a scoreless fifth inning despite giving up two walks. She did not fan a batter.

After being rained out of the East Alton-Wood River Tournament on Saturday, March 30, the team traveled to Breese for a contest against the Central Cougars. In that contest, they scored twice in the first inning and twice in the seventh on their way to a 4-0 win over their Clinton County foes.

Isabelle Lehan provided most of the offense for Triad. She went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored and three RBIs. Also collecting two hits for the Lady Knights was Daniel, who scored twice in the game. Coming up with a hit each for Triad was Caroline Lehan,  Wildhaber and Young.

Young was the winning pitcher for Triad. She threw a three-hit shutout at Breese Central, walking one batter and striking out seven others.

Two of the three hits against Young were by Central’s Chloe Book.

The Knights were schedule to face Breese Mater Dei on Tuesday, April 2. The results of that game were not available at press time.
