Redbird Recap; Cardinals perch at .500 plus City SC’s woes

By Mark Jurgena

It was crowded around the streets of St. Louis on the evening of Aug. 9 as we can attest. Heading to a comedy show at Enterprise Center, getting there at 6:50 and sitting in traffic, at stoplights etc., until 8:10.

We did enjoy it, though, there was just no parking to speak of.

With City SC hosting Nashville and the archrival Cubs in town to face the Cardinals, cars and pedestrians were everywhere, between those streaming to the soccer pitch and those leaving Busch Stadium en masse with the Redbirds down 9-0 at one point.

St. Louis Cardinals

Well, at least the Redbirds are square at .500 as of press time. They have an even 59-59 record as they enter the dog days of summer.

They are sitting in fourth place, a whole 14.5 games out of first place with the Milwaukee Brewers setting the pace in the National League Central Division.

The Chicago Cubs are 5.5 games behind, with the Cincinnati Reds 12 games out in third place.

The Birdos took two of three on the road against the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and had split a home series with the Chicago Cubs before the final game of the set featured on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN.

After three games with the Colorado Rockies this week, the Birds host the 27-time World Series champion New York Yankees at Busch Stadium this weekend.

St. Louis City SC

Well, City has…not had a very good season. In fact they were sitting with the second-worst record in the league before Saturday’s contest at Energizer Park.

Not only that, but City had won only twice in their previous 20 matches this season.

Their opponent, Nashville SC, was one of the top five teams in the 30-team league.

City 3 Nashville 1. Final. Full time.

Jaziel Orozco, Joao Klauss and Jeon Sang-Binn all scored for STL with goalkeeper Roman Burki recording six saves.

Orozco and Sang-Binn are two of the four new starters who were recently acquired for the stretch run.

City was last in action at the end of July for a friendly with the English Premier League club Aston Villa. Villa is in the preseason portion of their schedule as they prepare for the 151st year of play. They started in 1874.
