Maryville Board approves legal steps to clean up derelict property

By Kathy Turner • The Maryville Village Board on Aug. 20 approved two resolutions that will allow for the demolition of two structures in the village. Mayor Pro Tem Larry Gulledge, acting in the absence of Mayor Wayne White, called for a motion on the two properties.

The properties are located at 24 Dogwood Terrace and 130 West Perry Street. This action represents the end of a long process to get property owners to address concerns at a property. As a result, a court action authorized a resolution for the village to take action to remedy the issues.

In other legal action, the board approved an ordinance to sell two Ford Explorer SUVs as surplus. They are part of the Maryville Police Department fleet and are being replaced with new vehicles. Both vehicles require work that does not warrant their continued use by the department.

In other news, Stutz Excavating was approved as contractor on two projects in the village. The first is concrete repair work on Field Point Drive. The cost is $32,300. The second is a need recently identified for stormwater repair work on Manchester Drive, where a sinkhole has formed as a result of the heavy rainfall in recent weeks. That contract is for $3,200.

Gulledge announced that the village hall and public works buildings will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1 for the Labor Day holiday. He also reminded everyone that the village-wide yard sale is slated for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5 and 6. Sales will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Members of the Maryville Police Department and fire department participated in an active shooter training on Aug. 18 and Aug. 20. The training was held at Anderson Hospital and also included other local police and fire departments, EMS and the Anderson staff. The training was held in the evening hours when it would be least disruptive for hospital operations.

Finally, board members were witness to the swearing in of a new probationary firefighter, Ezra Dotson. Dotson will begin fire school training at SWIC immediately. His family members attended the meeting to witness the oath.

The next regular board meeting will be held on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. at village hall, 2520 N. Center St.
