Editor • A gray BMW sedan headed northbound on Interstate 55 near mile marker 16 on May 3 caught Troy Police Officer Cody Lucas’ attention, not because it was a Bimmer but because of its velocity. From the officer’s official field incident report, “As I began traveling north on I-55, the vehicle’s brake lights illuminated, then the vehicle appeared to accelerate.
“The vehicle continued northbound on I-55 near mile marker 17 while increasing its speed. I traveled at approximately 100 miles per hour [while the vehicle continued to increase the distance between us]. I activated my overhead lights and conducted a traffic stop on the interstate underneath the Route 162 overpass.
“I made contact with the driver and explained the reason for the stop. I asked the driver how fast he was going and he stated, ‘102.’
“I requested identification and Sebastian T. Fergus presented me with his Illinois driver’s license.”
Fergus, 19, of Highland was issued a citation for speeding, 35 miles per hour or more over the limit. He signed his pretrial conditions of release paperwork, received his copy and was released.
