Illinois State Police arrest Missouri man for first-degree murder after Venice shooting

EAST ST. LOUIS – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 Special Agents arrested 18-year-old Jason A. McCallum of Florissant, MO for two counts of First-Degree Murder (Class M Felony) following a deadly shooting in Venice, IL.

On May 26, 2026, the Venice Police Department requested ISP’s assistance with a homicide investigation in the 1200 Block of Selb Street. Officers located a deceased victim in a vehicle with gunshot wounds, now identified as 38-year-old Travion Sherrod of Madison, IL. ​

After a thorough investigation, ISP Special Agents identified McCallum as a suspect. ​On May 30, 2026, McCallum was taken into custody following a flight at St. Louis Lambert International Airport with the assistance of the airport police and the St. Louis County Police Department. ​ On June 1, 2026, Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed the First-Degree Murder charges for McCallum. He is being held in St. Louis County pending extradition back to Illinois.
