SWIC names inaugural head football coach

Southwestern Illinois College has announced the hiring of Tom Minnick as the Head Football Coach. Minnick brings with him more than three decades of coaching experience and a reputation for being a respected leader. He has a history of elevating community college programs to national prominence and is stepping into this role with a clear vision for the future of SWIC Football.

Minnick’s coaching career includes successful head coaching tenures at three top junior/community colleges, with the most recent being Garden City Community College. He has guided teams to multiple national championship appearances and earned induction into the 2021 NJCAA Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. So far, he’s compiled a 132-51 record over his collegiate coaching career.

Throughout his career, Minnick has emphasized mentorship, academic accountability, and personal growth as core components of his coaching philosophy. Those values, he says, will act as the foundation for the program that he plans to establish at Southwestern Illinois College.

“I believe the role of a coach extends beyond wins and losses,” said Minnick. “Mentorship, leadership development, and teaching life lessons through the game are core values I bring to every program. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to positively impact many athletes and I am eager to continue fostering growth both on and off the field.”

Known for his disciplined approach, strong recruiting networks, and ability to develop high character student-athletes, Minnick has built a reputation as a program builder who consistently produces competitive, well-prepared teams. Minnick will be building the Blue Storm football program from the ground up. Over the coming year, he will focus on recruiting, establishing program structure, and laying the groundwork for a competitive and sustainable future. The team is set to take the field in Fall 2027.

As the only community college in the Metro East to offer football, SWIC is entering an exciting new era. Minnick’s arrival marks a significant step forward for SWIC Athletics. It signals to the community that the college is committed to continuing the development of high-quality programs, both on and off the field.
