Structure fire on Montgomery Street in Troy destroys home

According to Troy Fire Protection Chief Darren Davis, the Troy Fire Protection District was called on Feb. 24 for a house fire reported by a passerby who said smoke they saw smoke coming from a residence in the 200 block of Montgomery Street. The caller did not think any people were home at the time.

“We were dispatched at 09:22,” Davis said. “Radio traffic from the Troy Police Department was that there was a confirmed active fire with heavy involvement, along with heavy smoke. With this information and box alarm was activated, bringing Maryville Fire and Glen Carbon to the scene and the O’Fallon Fire Department to our station for a change of quarters.

“On arrival, conditions were found to have heavy fire in the middle of the residence,” Davis continued. “Search and fire suppression began immediately. It was confirmed that the residence was unoccupied by people. There were reports of a dog and two cats in the residence.

“A second alarm was requested, bringing O’Fallon Fire to the scene and Collinsville Fire to our station with an engine and an ambulance to fill our station for any other calls,” Davis said. “Madison County EMA responded for rehab of the fire ground personnel. Heavy winds hampered fire suppression efforts. There were no injuries, but unfortunately, the dog and cats perished in the fire.  Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as they traverse the traumatic road to recovery.”

Davis said the cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office. He added that fire crews were on scene for about five hours, or until mid-afternoon, due to heavy wind conditions and the construction of the residence.
