Triad Schools’ summer facility upgrades on track for completion by Aug. 13

By Charles Bolinger

Editor • The Triad School District hosted a facilities meeting on June 8, where Brian Mattingly, the director of facilities, gave the facilities committee an update on where his department’s work stands now that the students and staff members are on break for the summer.

All of the projects listed below should be completed before the first day of the 2026-2027 school year, which is Thursday, Aug. 13.

Starting with Marine Elementary School, Mattingly said the school’s roof replacement has started and is on target to be done. Superintendent Dr. Jason Henderson added on June 10 that all of the Marine classroom upgrades should be done before the students return in August.

At Henning Elementary School, there are two projects ongoing – first is tile replacement inside the school while across Creekside Drive, crews will expand the bus parking lot then bring the remainder of the district’s buses from Triad Middle and perhaps other schools, to cluster them all across from Henning.

At Triad High School, there are a variety of projects in motion. First, the front of the school has been pressure washed to remove years of accumulated dirt and grime; Henderson said the mezzanine section has yet to be washed.

The football stadium will receive new lighting and a new digital scoreboard this summer. The scoreboard will also be used during other functions like at commencement each June.

In other THS work, there is a valve replacement project ongoing, a tile replacement project and replacing parts of the fire suppression system.

Next, Henderson and Associate Superintendent Dr. Rodney Winslow updated the facilities committee on bond issue construction progress at Marine, the new Triad Middle School and at THS.

At Marine Elementary as of June 2, the following work has been completed:

  • The exterior concrete slab was completed on April 30
  • The concrete masonry unit (CMU) block wall was erected during May with the storm drain system finished by Memorial Day
  • Steel framing was placed over the library/office space with preparation for the roof frame to be placed in June

At the new Triad Middle School, which began construction last October, a lot of progress had been made this spring.

As of May 29, Selvaggio Steel has been busy with the school’s skeleton, crews focused on framing and decking in Areas C (the building’s center) and E (the eastern end). By mid-May, structural steel for the Area E Storm Shelter was installed. As May went on, work shifted to detailing in Area E and completing the roof decking in Areas B (over the gyms at the rear of the school) and C. By Memorial Day week, crews finished the roof decking while continuing to work in Area E.

On the cement side of things, Vee-Jay Cement made several essential pours in May. The month started with pouring the Area D slab (just behind Area C). The school’s kitchen, career and training education classrooms and varsity locker rooms were all focused on last month and led to a major pour during the final week of May. By May 31, the team began preparing the remaining slab on grade and deck pours for the first and second floors in Areas B and C.

When it comes to mechanical, electrical and plumbing, Lowry Electric crews worked in Area A (west side) last month as they progressed from overhead to in-wall rough-ins on the second floor. Bel-O Plumbing and Hock Mechanical worked on their own overhead and in-wall rough-ins while Rapid Fire Protection added rough-ins for fire suppression equipment to both floors of Area A.

Finally, employees with George Weis completed their exterior metal stud and sheathing installation in mid-May, allowing air barrier installation to start, while interior framing started on May 8 and worked rapidly on both floors. Lakeside Roofing began putting on the school’s roof on May 22.

Henderson said the project is on target to be substantially complete by July 20, 2027, with a total of three days lost in May to rain.

At Triad High, exterior walls have gone up around the new auditorium and multi-purpose room at the back of the building as of May 29. The culinary arts and art classroom remodel is still to come this year, while the band room and cafeteria remodel is due in 2027. There are also more classrooms to add between the art rooms and the auditorium. The career/technical classes will be upgraded in 2027.

The next Triad School Board meeting is June 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the district’s administration building, located at 203 E. Throp St. in Troy.
