Maryville board strengthens ordinance on dangerous trees
By Kathy Turner • The Maryville board on Wednesday, June 17 approved an amendment to the village ordinance regulating trees and shrubs in the village. The amendment will allow the zoning department to notify residents of trees that are considered dangerous or at risk of causing damage. This will include trees encroaching on neighboring properties or showing signs of disease or death. Residents will be given time to deal with the trees of concern before potential fines are levied.
The board also approved two ordinances regarding easements. Both are regarding the village sewage lift station. The perpetual easements will allow the village access to sewage lift stations. As part of the project, the village approved an agreement to improve Birch Lane between the village and property owners Christopher and Cassie Luther.
The board approved a project authorization with FGM Architects for services at the street department facility. This is to make necessary repairs to address mine subsidence.
The board witnessed the swearing-in ceremony for a new firefighter for the village. Jacob Milton received his credentials in a brief ceremony. Milton has served as a volunteer with the department but will now serve as a full-time firefighter/EMT-Basic. Milton will be enrolled in the fire academy as well as paramedic/EMT training.
During new business, trustee Mike Vallino asked that the village commemorate the 250th birthday of the United States by installing flags on the graves of veterans and firefighters at the cemetery. Village trustees will meet to place the flags on Thursday evening, July 2.
Mayor Wayne White asked for the approval to appoint Cheryl Knutson to the Parks and Recreation Committee. Her term will run through April 30, 2029.
White also reminded everyone of the Kayaking event at Droste Park on Saturday, June 27. The event will start at noon.
The next board meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 1 at 6 p.m.
